New Horizons in Research on Traditional Costumes
Scholarly research into regional traditional dress and folk culture is one of the Centre for Traditional Costume's main focuses and is conducted in close cooperation with the Centre’s collection, craftsmanship, and publications departments.
To date, research activities at the Centre for Traditional Costume have been driven by the current state of research, which is based largely on work carried out before 1950.
Solid findings are lacking in many areas. Therefore, taking a more modern approach to the study of vestimentary phenomena is a central aspect of the mission and raison d’être of the Centre for Traditional Costume. Only modern research methods can generate a solid basis for debates, publications and advice that are in tune with the times. This applies both to fundamental research and to research on specific topics.
The research work of the Centre for Traditional Costume of the Administrative District of Upper Bavaria embraces both independent and joint projects. Interdisciplinary exchange and comparative research in an international context form important reference points for the Centre.
